Gertrude Jekyll (1843-1932) is firmly ensconced in the pantheon of great gardeners. Her opus, "Home and Garden", first published in 1900, contains chapters on The Workshop and The Kinship of Common Tools and includes a tender paean to the pleasure of wielding an old, worn spade. Her favorite weeder was a short handled, two tine fork now commonly called a "Jekyll Weeder". Our version is forged from 3/8-inch diameter rod. The gently curved, sharply pointed and about 8-inch long tines are about an inch apart, leaving about a 5/8-inch gap between. Overall, the tool is about a foot long. It penetrates soil easily and is used to pry, twist and extract the most stubborn weeds. If you want a sturdier version, request it to be made from 1/2-inch diameter rod when you order.

The One Tool

I�m reviewing after over a decade. I don�t think of it as a weeder � it�s my best tool for fine hand digging, busting clumps, mixing in compost around established plants, making rows for seeds, planting small bulbs, carefully harvesting root crops, edging beds, loosening transplants., and yes, digging out weeds. I�ve had a few similar tools over the years, but they barely last a season. The Red Pig Jeckyl tool looks well-used, but it�s as good as the day I got it. I love this tool.

I use this excellent hand tool mainly for the weeding and light soil tilling of potted plants. The slimness allows me great precision. It's a very well built and stout tool.

Best Weeder

My go to weeder for years and the way it holds up, will be for years to come. As others mentioned, if I had to choose one tool, this would be it. The tines are rock solid and don�t budge under even extreme pressure. Probably going to buy a second since I have not found anything close to it.
