Ball Weeder

Sale price$45.00

A Victorian invention, Ball Weeders have a two pronged fork protruding from a 2 1/2-inch diameter knob at the base of a short handle. While effective at prying taprooted weeds such as dandelions, they are also useful for removing weeds with spreading roots. The ball is an excellent fulcrum that gives you leverage even when the ground is soft or wet. Weeders with narrow, strap-like fulcrums penetrate soft, wet surfaces and fail to give leverage. The one shortcoming of traditional ball weeders is their short handle. They give you a great fulcrum but not much of a lever. Our Ball Weeder has a full 10 inches of shaft and handle above the ball, giving a many fold increase in mechanical advantage. The forged head is strong enough and long enough to grab mature taproots by the shoulder and pop them out of the ground with ease.
Push straight down near the weed, and roll backward or down to grab and lift the weed out.

The fork on a ball weeder is everything, I've discovered. While the Red Pig ball weeder has been useful in my garden, the antique ball weeder I bought it to replace was superior - and I believe it's all in the design of the fork. You can see what I mean by looking at an old one, there's an example pretty close to the one I had at frenchgardenhouse dot com or just by searching on "vintage Plomb wood ball weeder," where the inside of the fork is U-shaped instead of V-shaped, and the tines are slender and square-cut until they taper at the ends. This engineering really appears to make all the difference when attacking weeds with deep tap roots such as dandelions. While I appreciate my Red Pig one, I am back to looking for another vintage or similarly designed ball weeder to replace the tool I lost because it was really the right thing for the job. If you roll out a new version please do let me know! :)
